3rdAnnual "Not-NPFF" Downriver Race & Club Championships - BWA Doesn't Exist Edition 2012

The 3rd Annual "Not-NPFF" Downriver Race & Club Championships on Elkhorn Creek will take place Saturday, February 25th, high noon.

This years race is the BWA DOESN'T EXIST edition whereby the Louisville Vikings will look to continue their dominance over their cross state rival, the Bluegrass Wildwater Association. Just ask Coach Cal.

"It's a unique thing," Calamari said. "There's no other state, none, that's as connected to their whitewater clubs as this one. It's the Louisville Vikings throughout this whole state, and that's what makes it unique."

And who wouldn't believe that guy? Consider staying home and nursing your Friday night NPFF party hangovers BWA...the Viking paddlespan is too huge.

YOU MUST REGISTER (CLICK HERE) BEFORE NOON ON FEB 24TH.

If you fail to register online there is no guarantee you'll make it onto the racers list.

Be at the Elkhorn Acres Take-Out Before Noon day of race.

The race will be mass start below the dam and run to the Shaffley's take out.

All boats will start from shore, boats over 10 feet will start bassackwards.

There will be 2 classes: guys & dames.

Most importantly, there will also be a club championship. Any "whitewater club" with 5 racers can join...this is not just VCC vs. BWA.

Club teams need at least 5 members to qualify. We will use Cross Country Scoring...it goes like this: the top five finishers from each club add their finish order together to get a score, lowest combined club score wins.

Remember...the NPFF has nothing to do with this race so don't go asking NPFF volunteers questions about it. They have other things to worry about.

PS...this is going to be a "fun run". Paddlers that wouldn't normally do a downriver race should definitely get out and give it a shot!

43 racers (of the 75 registered) showed up on Saturday to take part in a rain soaked Not-NPFF Downriver Race and Club Championship. The water level was too high to portage the dam so we raced the lower Elkhorn from AW Acres to the bridge below Canoe Kentucky. The course turned out great and it was a forearm flaming, shoulder sizzling, core crunching and bicep blasting race.

But let's get to the important part...

THE LOUISVILLE VIKINGS AVENGED LAST YEARS FLUKE DEFEAT TO THE BWA WITH A DOMINATING PERFORMANCE LAYING TO REST THE QUESTION OF WHICH CLUB IS ACTUALLY THE STRONGEST IN THE BLUGRASS.

Vikings had a very strong turnout with 17 of 22 registered boaters showing up to race. Compared to 14 of 28 registered showing up for the BWA.

Vikings also represented 11 of the top 15 and had the 2 top ladies by a long way. It was a great showing and i thank you all for showing up and responding to the call of duty.

Also many thanks to Nathan and Canoe Kentucky for providing access and a very helpful shuttle after the race. Show them some love.

As i said last year: today is a rest day but Not-NPFF race training starts tomorrow!

Current picture of Elkhorn Creek dam

There WILL be a race Saturday on the Elkhorn!

What section(s) we race is yet to be determined.

We'll figure it out...everyone just take a deep breath and be there tomorrow.

Safety will be paramount in making any decisions so have no fear.

PS...It's called the NOT-NPFF race for a reason. Don't call NPFF types to get info. They don't know and are busy planning other, more important things.
